What we are expecting the churches to do.
If you are a church and would like to help a refugee family or individual, then here is what we are expecting to accomplish. If you do want to be a part, there are a few things they will be in need of, and money is far down the list of importance. What they really need is for people to show them that they care for them, and are willing to spend some time with them. Here are a few things that we have come up with, that will help aid you in your ministry to the refugees.
1. They need to learn English. The best way is to just spend time with them. Ask them to your house, and let them spend the evening with your family. They need to see a loving family functioning together. You can also visit them at their place.
2. They need transportation. Giving them rides to the grocery store, church, the bank, work, and so on will greatly assist these people. Most of them can not drive yet.
3. Provide childcare. Most of these people do not have their complete family over here yet, which means someone will have to help watch their children when they go to work.
4. Help find a better job. If your church is big enough, there most likely are plenty of people who could help with this. If your church is small and you can't help with this one, that is fine, they already have some type of job.
5. Teach them basic needs. We take for granted some of the modern conveniences that we have in America. They, however, are very ignorant about how to use various things. For example, they don't understand banking, and they need to learn.
6. Pray and disciple them. This one should be obvious, but just to make sure.
7. Financially help them. We don't want to create hand-outs, however, there might be legitimate needs that will come. Help with housing, electric bills, and personal toiletries. (Food stamps will not cover toothpaste, deodorant, soap, etc.).
If this is something you think your church is willing to take on, then please contact me at mike@2and7ministries.com
Thank you,
